Helping students become confident masters of math and music

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes you different from other tutors or teachers?

I focus just as much on how to become an independent and self-motivated learner as I do on the material we’re working on. I want you to become someone who knows how to teach yourself better than any tutor or teacher possibly could. My greatest success in this work would be making myself obsolete because there are no students left who need help learning.

Why do you like working with under-confident or anxious students?

I have spent my entire student and professional life being “different” because I’m a woman in a traditionally male world. Just by being female, I face extra challenges both in the tech industry and in the music industry. My life experience has given me enormous compassion for anyone who believes - for whatever reason - that they are not “the right” type of person, or that they are not prepared to perform well at a challenging task. I’m here to help students find their power, their independence, and their own amazing abilities so that they can do what they want to do in life.

What equipment do I need to be able to work with you?

You’ll need a cell phone, a tablet, or a computer and a decent internet connection. Your device must have a working microphone. (It is strongly preferred that your device also has a working camera.) You’ll need a working email account. You must have a phone number where I can reach you. I prefer to also be able to exchange text messages with you, but this is not a requirement. I provide the Zoom link that we’ll use for our sessions.

I’m not in the US. Can we still work together?

Absolutely! Having lived and worked all over the world, I love working with families from all over. I currently have students in Canada, South Korea, and Europe. Check out my scheduling page to find time slots that will work for you in your time zone. If you don’t find anything there that works for you, please email me so that we create something that does!

Visit my scheduling page to find a time slot that will work for you! if you don’t find anything there that works for you, please email me so that we can create something that does. I use a system called Acuity to manage your appointments with me. You’ll create an account at Acuity (don’t worry, it’s easy!) that you’ll use to schedule, cancel, and reschedule appointments.

Can I cancel or reschedule if I need to?

Yes, within limits. Cancellations and rescheduling must happen at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled time slot. I use a system called Acuity to manage your appointments with me. Using your account at Acuity (don’t worry, it’s easy!), you will be able to make all the changes you need to using Acuity, as long as you respect the 24 hour rule. Any cancellations or reschedules that take place less than 24 hours in advance will be charged at full price. How do I pay you?

I accept PayPal and Venmo. If you would like to use a credit card, you can set up your credit card within either of those two systems for easy payment processing.

What if I need help with biology or chemistry?

I don’t generally teach in those fields, except for answering occasional questions that come up as we’re doing other work. If you need intensive support with a subject in which I’m not working, I have a wide network of other tutors to whom I can refer. If you’d like a referral in this area, please feel free to email me.

I’m preparing for the LSAT, can you help me?

I can help with high level planning around the LSAT, the MCAT, and other specialized graduate admission tests. But if you need intensive test prep for one of these exams, I prefer to refer you to the world class experts I know who can help you. If you’d like a referral in this area, please feel free to email me.

I’m an advanced guitar player, can you teach me?

If you’re interested in learning about what’s fundamentally going on in the music you’re playing - for instance if you’d like to learn to listen to songs and then be able to figure out how to play them on your own - I can definitely help. My own guitar skills are “intermediate” at best, however. I play rhythm and backup parts in the studio work I do. As a guitar teacher I’m GREAT at helping novices get onto the right track musically, and to develop great habits. But if you’re asking this question, chances are you’re a better player than I am. I know some amazing, fabulous top-end guitar teachers, so if you’d like to talk it over or get a referral, please email me or come see me for a free consult.
